CD Projekt Red has started development on Project Orion, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.
A CD Projekt Red developer claims that Cyberpunk 2077 was "just a warm-up" as work on the sequel begins. Narrative director Igor Sarzyński said the team will "kickstart" work on the next game, presently known as Project Orion, from their new office.
This comes as Cyberpunk 2077's continuous development has mostly concluded, with no new features planned for the game. The most recent version, which was issued in December, included the long-awaited metro feature, but it will be the final big patch as CDPR looks ahead.
"First day at the Boston office!" Sarzyński tweeted, "So good to meet old friends and officially kickstart our Orion journey," which was spotted by PC Gamer. "I couldn't be more excited for this project, and I'm confident we can make it something unique. "2077 was simply a warm-up."
While it comes from a laughing joke about returning to work, claiming that 2077 was a "warm-up" is a big statement. It was announced in 2012 before receiving severe criticism in 2020. Over the last few years, the studio has regained its reputation by providing free updates, bringing Cyberpunk 2077 closer to the game presented in previews. We also received a paid expansion via Phantom Liberty that made the most of the revamped RPG systems.
So, if CDPR intends to go even bigger in the sequel, we'll almost certainly have a long wait. That's especially important if the firm wants to avoid another disastrous launch, as developers of the game requested extra time and warned that it wouldn't be ready for its 2020 release date.
Of course, CDPR is currently developing several other games. The next installment in The Witcher series is also in development, with the previous game released in 2015. CDPR has used part of what it learned from the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in this game, stating that it will focus more on console ports. This comes after the console versions of Cyberpunk 2077 performed incredibly poorly, with much more performance difficulties and crashes. Hopefully, none of these teams are pushed or pressed this time around, and we'll get the games when they're ready.
